Revolutionizing Cancer Detection for a Leading Healthcare Innovator

How a leading cancer diagnostic company transformed its on-prem solution to expedite cancer detection and prevention.

The Client Domain.

The client is a leader in diagnostic innovation, pioneering cutting-edge AI-driven technology that enables healthcare professionals to proactively detect and prevent cancer before it starts. With an unwavering commitment to patient well-being, the client empowers healthcare service providers to overcome challenges through their exclusive platform. This unique solution seamlessly integrates computer imaging, AI, molecular biology, and three-dimensional cytopathology, fostering an innovative synergy that enables the detection of precancerous changes, overcoming the constraints of previous methods.

The Challenge.

The client’s core process involves the collection of biopsy samples from patients, which are then processed in their laboratory. To facilitate the identification of specific cell structures and abnormalities, these samples are stained, resulting in images that are used to create slides. These slides, in turn, serve as the basis for microscopic examinations, enabling the accurate diagnosis and detection of malignancies within the samples.

Despite having successfully conducted these operations for over two decades with their custom application, the client recognized the imperative to expand its reach, making its expertise accessible to healthcare professionals and laboratories nationwide. The need was to develop a technically robust, scalable web-based solution that would streamline the complex task of early-stage cancer detection and prevention.

The Solution.

iPivot was chosen by the client to create a dynamic web-based application that streamlined the diagnostic process by seamlessly connecting healthcare experts, laboratories, logistics service providers – right from sample collection to evaluation to final report generation. This innovative solution boasted a robust workflow engine that empowered pathologists to efficiently manage their workload. With the workflow engine, pathologists could easily view a range of assigned cases, select specific cases, access in-depth case details, including diagnostic comments, and generate various diagnostic reports.

The workflow engine has an array of features, including case identification, patient information, date of birth, biopsy date, assignment date, case type, and case status etc. It also offered search capabilities and a report history feature along with report actions such as preview, release, or consultation.

iPivot delivered a comprehensive solution that culminated in the generation of PDF-based reports, offering a complete diagnostic profile of the patient. These reports included patient info, specimen details, the testing facility’s location, and conclusive diagnostic findings authenticated by healthcare experts. Notably, to harness the full potential of this web-based application, the solution was built on AWS rather than opting for an on-premises solution.

Other noteworthy features of the solution include:

  • An impressive 500x zoom capability for slider images, offering an in-depth view of the specimen.
  • The ability to generate high-resolution image slides for the purpose of annotating, creating reports, and sharing them with other laboratories or diagnostic centers.
  • Monitor the slide movement from the laboratory to the doctor and back, recognizing the importance of both physical images and digital slides for the doctors’ assessments.
  • Maintain meticulous records of case assignment to individual doctors, distribution, execution, and even automated identification of any cases that may have encountered difficulties or failed during the process.
  • An evaluation function that assesses the current state of the issue and its future implications, guided by any indicative signs.
  • Streamlined capture of crucial diagnostic comments, aiding in the determination of sample positivity or negativity.

Key Technologies Used

The Impact.

The implementation of this new, highly responsive application offered a number of advantages to the client, including:

Empowered healthcare experts with a feature-rich, highly interactive interface, enabling them to efficiently carry out a variety of tasks and generate comprehensive reports.

Provided pathologists and doctors with the capability to proactively view their assigned tasks, intelligently manage workloads, and collaborate with other professionals and share workload based on availability, and holidays.

Enhanced communication channels between doctors, pathologists, labs and logistic service providers, fostering more efficient interactions and facilitating timely exchange of vital information.

Provided invaluable assistance to hundreds of thousands of patients with timely and stress-free cancer diagnosis, thereby playing a pivotal role in the early detection.

Pathology Solution experienced a 21% increase on average in diagnostic capacity compared to microscopy when using a digital workflow for primary diagnosis

Conclusion

The client is now benefiting from a scalable and exceptionally interactive interface, thanks to the intelligent workflow distribution software. This transformation has streamlined the entire diagnostic process, providing a high-level view on patient records. After two years of dedicated effort, iPivot has built and deployed a world-class application. The application is now running smoothly, delivering a seamless experience to all stakeholders while reshaping cancer diagnosis and prevention.
