Precision in Healthcare: How Deep Zooming is Shaping Cell Diagnosis

How Deep Zoom Image (DZI) display proved to be a game-changer in achieving diagnostic excellence for a healthcare company.

The Client Domain.

The client stands at the forefront of revolutionary diagnostic advancements, empowering healthcare professionals to detect and prevent health issues even before they manifest. The client supports healthcare service providers with its distinctive platform that leverages computer imaging, and other cutting-edge tools and technologies to facilitate early identification of potential health risks.

The Challenge.

The client processes biopsy samples within their advanced laboratory, focusing on the early detection and prevention of life-threatening diseases such as cancer. Over the years, it faced challenges related to generating and viewing stained biopsy samples at higher resolutions, which are crucial for pinpointing anomalies. This capability is instrumental in the early prevention of health conditions before they progress to a critical stage.

Recognizing the need to modernize their biopsy diagnosis process and extend their impact, the client embarked on a journey to develop a cutting-edge web-based solution. The client needed an innovative platform that plays a critical role in enabling pathologists to examine stained samples at significantly enhanced zoom levels, thereby facilitating the swift, accurate detection and prevention of various medical conditions.

The Solution.

iPivot addressed the challenge by developing a web application that harnesses OpenSeadragon to read the data stored in deep zoomed image (.DZI) format.  OpenSeadragon (OSD) is a web-based image viewer that is specifically designed for high-resolution images and zoomable content such as large photographs and maps. OSD provides a smooth and interactive user experience for exploring and navigating through large images, allowing users to effortlessly zoom in and out, pan across the image, and delve into minute details.

iPivot standardized all biopsy samples to be diagnosed in. DZI format and used the OpenSeadragon framework to load these images for pathological analysis. The web application, hosted on AWS infrastructure, not only granted pathologists unrestricted access but also provided anytime access to pathologists. It came with a comprehensive set of tools for annotating, zooming, and pinpointing key areas within the images. The exceptional high-resolution capability proved invaluable in identifying potential health threats. Moreover, the solution facilitated collaboration among pathologists and healthcare experts, enabling them to conduct various quality checks to enhance diagnostic outcomes.

Key highlights of the solution include:

  • Enhanced Image Viewing: Enables pathologists to access stained cell samples stored in the AWS S3 bucket, offering zoom and pan capabilities through the OpenSeadragon Viewer for more comprehensive sample analysis.
  • Comprehensive Image Control: Offers deep zoom capabilities up to 200x magnification, intuitive navigation controls including zoom buttons, a slider, full-screen mode, and a convenient navigator panel for quick sample exploration.
  • Integrated Diagnostic Platform: Seamlessly integrates an Image Classifier on the left-side with the Whole Slide Image (WSI) on the right, which offers a comprehensive sample view akin to a microscope. These viewers interact harmoniously; clicking on a spot on the left instantly reveals its precise location on the right, facilitating efficient sample analysis for pathologists.
  • Enhanced Image Analysis: Offers a suite of powerful features, including the ability to display overlays, tag and comment on specific areas using rectangles, and apply various image filters such as Gamma, brightness, contrast, and sharpness adjustments to analyze critical areas with precision.
  • Comprehensive Workflow: Allows pathologists to provide comments and mark stains for further consultation, especially when there is a high likelihood of cancer symptoms.
  • Diagnostic Report Generation: Features an automated Report Builder for efficient report generation as soon as the diagnosis is done and comments are added. Additionally, the solution supports various workflows, enabling report correction, consultation, and amendments as needed.
